What a promise ring means
A promise ring is a symbol of commitment between two people who are not yet engaged, or who simply want a ring that says they are in it together. It can mean a promise to get engaged later, a promise of faithfulness, or anything else the two of you decide it means. There is no single rule.
A promise ring is usually simpler and smaller than an engagement ring, so the engagement ring still feels like a step forward when it comes.
Choosing a promise ring
- Heart shapes are the most openly romantic choice. A heart solitaire or a band of small hearts says it without words.
- A slim band or small solitaire keeps the ring easy to wear every day.
- A fashion ring in the style they already love can be just as meaningful as a traditional design.
Which finger?
Many people wear a promise ring on the ring finger of the left hand, then move it to the right hand when they become engaged. What an anniversary ring means
An anniversary ring celebrates the years since the wedding. The classic choice is an eternity band, with stones that circle the finger without a break, a fitting symbol for a love that keeps going. Many people add one to their stack beside the engagement ring and wedding band.

- Full eternity bands carry stones all the way around, for sparkle from every angle.
- Half eternity bands set stones across the top, which keeps the palm side smooth and comfortable in a stack.
- Match or contrast. Repeat the stone shape and metal color of the engagement ring for a seamless stack, or add a different shape or color for contrast.
